Top Researchers Present Latest Data on Diet and Cancer at Third Annual Cancer and Nutrition Symposium

The Cancer Project will host its third annual Cancer and Nutrition Symposium for health professionals on Saturday, August 16, at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Md. Registered Dietitians (R.D.s) and Dietetic Technicians Registered (D.T.R.s) will be eligible to receive five Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs) upon completion of the conference.

As emerging evidence shows the complex role of healthy food choices in cancer prevention and survival, top researchers, including John Pierce, Ph.D., of the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) study, and Rowan Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D., of the Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS), will join Neal Barnard, M.D., president of The Cancer Project, for a daylong exploration of groundbreaking research on cancer and nutrition.

Top experts from around the United States will share findings from their recent studies on the role of plant-based diets in cancer prevention and survival during the third annual Cancer and Nutrition Symposium.

Who: The symposium will feature the following expert speakers:

John Pierce, Ph.D., professor and researcher at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, will present the results of his WHEL study on the role of a plant-based diet in breast cancer progression.
Rowan Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, will discuss the results of WINS, which evaluated the role of a low-fat diet in breast cancer recurrence.
Ruth Marlin, M.D., associate director of the Northern California Melanoma Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco, will discuss results from her recent trial with Dean Ornish, M.D., about lifestyle factors in prostate cancer.
Mark J. Messina, Ph.D., of Loma Linda University and co-author of The Simple Soybean and Your Health, will share his research on soy and cancer.
Alison M. Duncan, Ph.D., professor at the University of Guelph, will speak about her research on soy and prostate cancer.
Neal Barnard, M.D., president of The Cancer Project, will summarize its research and education initiatives.

Registration: Open to all health professionals; continental breakfast and lunch are included. Register by May 31 to pay the “Early Bird Special” price of $69 for the conference. After May 31, the conference will cost $119. Certificates will be given to R.D.s and D.T.R.s who attend the entire symposium as receipt of five CPEUs.
